Well that was different. The early, first lap crash between Perez, Hulkenberg and Magnussen (yes Magnussen yet again) meant that the only exciting part of a race at Monaco disappeared; The mandatory pit stop. After the red flag came out after the collision, everyone got a free pit stop. This meant virtually no overtakes at all, and definitely none by the top half of the drivers.
In his sixth try, LecLerc finally broke the long negative streak he's been having at the Monaco track. Two DNFs (Did Not Finish), one DNS (Did Not Start), one sixth and one fourth later, he finally gets to stand at the top of the podium on his home track. He was so emotional, and clearly so comfortable in his win, he spent the last laps thinking about his dad, who past away some years ago, and how they had the shared dream of Charles one day driving F1 in Monaco and even winning. That day and that dream has now come true.
Verstappen joked with his race engineer that he should get a pillow, so he could sleep. It was clear early on that if you get in Pole Position on qualifying on Saturday and you manage to drive the Sunday without any major mistakes, you're pretty much set. Yes, you still have to drive the whole race, never knowing if a crash or similar will change the strategy and make things less predictable, but in the end, if you're P1 at the start, you're pretty sure to be P1 at the finish.
